The son of Joaquín Guzmán Loera also known as El Chapo, Ovidio Guzmán López was detained Thursday after a government security patrol came under attack, Mexico's security minister stated. Rumors of the arrest circulated for hours before the announcement, setting off gunbattles all over Culiacan, the home of the Sinaloa Cartel.Mexico's Security Minister confirmed the arrest of El Chapo's son, stating he was discovered amongst four men after a defense and National Guard contingent was attacked while patrolling in Culiacán. Ovidio Guzman López is already wanted in the US on drug-trafficking charges.

After his arrest, the Sinaloa Cartel turned the city into a warzone, torching cars and buses on fire blocking the main roads in and out of the city, videos show alleged cartel members firing .50-cal sniper rifles at the government troops from the back of armored trucks. In order to "save lives" of government troops and civilians, the son of El Chapo was let go.
